Our club offers logistical and operational assistance to the Summer Lunch program at Pine Acres Community Center. During COVID-19, this has expanded to a Mon-Fri service of delivering breakfast and lunch to over 1000 students in southern Wake County. We also distribute family boxes from the Food Bank of Northern & Eastern NC and the Interfaith Food Shuttle using this same program.
Members of our club with the help of some community volunteers (our spouses and neighbors) spend every Tuesday morning of the school year reading and gifting books to 1st & 2nd graders at Fuquay-Varina Elementary. This program helps students who are below their expected reading level practice reading skills and work to acquire books of their own.
Our club installs and monitors Little Free Library locations in the local community. As of Spring 2020, we have 5 locations, and are expecting to install one more this summer. Residents are welcome to add books to the libraries at any time, space permitting. If one needs repair, please call (919) 454-3487.
Every summer, our club takes a group of disadvantaged kids from our community to a Salamanders game in Holly Springs. Rotarians "sponsor" the children and the event includes all-you-can-eat cheeseburgers, hotdogs, drinks and popcorn. Sometimes the kids even get ice cream!
Every January, our club participates in a RISE Against Hunger event at Hope Church in Apex that is organized by Oaks & Acorns. We package meals for distribution through school feeding programs, orphanages, health clinics, crisis intervention agencies, and disaster recovery organizations. In 2020 we packaged 20,000 meals in 90 minutes. We hope to double that in 2021!
Every February, our District organizes a service trip to the D.R. to help with various projects. We built latrines the first several years, but more recent trips have involved building houses, school buildings, etc. This is a long-standing international service project that several of our club members have participated in, and starting in 2021 our club will be one of the projects's sponsoring clubs.
Every fall, our club participates in the Rotary Global Run for Water event in Cary's WakeMed Soccer Park. In 2019, we WON the Rotarian Water Carry Challenge, when our team collectively carried 76 gallons of water for a mile! We plan to defend our champion status in 2020! This event raises money for clean water projects here and abroad!
Every other month, club members deliver Meals on Wheels to elderly and shut-in residents in our community. We have a designated route on Wednesdays and we alternate deliveries with the other Rotary club in town on a monthly basis.
