Members of our club with the help of some community volunteers (our spouses and neighbors) spend every Tuesday morning of the school year reading and gifting books to 1st & 2nd graders at Fuquay-Varina Elementary. This program helps students who are below their expected reading level practice reading skills and work to acquire books of their own. This project has restarted for the first time since the pandemic started - Tuesday mornings at 8:30am. Guest readers are welcome and encouraged! Email shearm@bellsouth.net.
Spring 2022 brings us a new project, somewhat related to our LIttle Free Library project. Spearheaded by club member Carrie Boos, Little Free Pantries will provide space for community residents to find donated food products for their families. These Pantries are being built in March and installed in April/May at American Legion Post #116 and at Pine Acres Community Center. More are planned at a later date.
Our club installs and monitors Little Free Library locations in the local community. As of Spring 2022, we have 5 locations, and are expecting to install 2-3 more. Residents are welcome to add books to the libraries at any time, space permitting. If one needs repair, please call (919) 910-431-7937.
Every summer, our club takes a group of disadvantaged kids from our community to a Salamanders game in Holly Springs. Rotarians "sponsor" the children and the event includes all-you-can-eat cheeseburgers, hotdogs, drinks and popcorn. Sometimes the kids even get ice cream!
Our club offers logistical and operational assistance to the Summer Lunch program at Pine Acres Community Center. During COVID-19, this expanded to a Mon-Fri service of delivering breakfast and lunch to over 1000 students in southern Wake County. For more information, email Bryan Haynes at bmh1919@gmail.com .
Every January, our club participates in a RISE Against Hunger event at Hope Church in Apex that is organized by Oaks & Acorns. We package meals for distribution through school feeding programs, orphanages, health clinics, crisis intervention agencies, and disaster recovery organizations. In 2020 we packaged 20,000 meals in 90 minutes. We hope to resume those efforts once the pandemic allows for large, in-person events.
The first Saturday of every month is Trash Pickup Day! This is a monthly endeavor that usually involves Railroad Street in Fuquay-Varina, but depending on need we do clean other areas in town. If you are lookng for a volunteer effort to help with, this is a good one! For information on location, please watch the Downtown Fuquay-Varina Rotary Club Facebook page or email Katyna at katyna@nclegacy.com.
Every other month, club members deliver Meals on Wheels to elderly and shut-in residents in our community. We have a designated route on Wednesdays and we alternate deliveries with the other Rotary club in town on a monthly basis. Volunteers are welcome! Email wstephens70@gmail.com for more information or to help!
